How to Lace volleyball shoes? 3 Easy tips

The volleyball game is not new, however, nowadays its popularity is dramatically increasing day by day. The pro players are trying to get more fame in this sport, meanwhile, the beginners are struggling to get extra chances. Different skills matter to become a good volleyball player, nevertheless, most of us learn the tough things and ignore the basic ones.

Apart from high jumps, swift stepping, and good traction, lacing the volleyball shoes accurately is also quite important in this regard. Being an old volleyball player, there was a lack of guidance about tying the laces of volleyball shoes, and unfortunately, I lost many precious hits and bore ankle twists many times.

Have you ever experienced that your shoes are exactly your foot size and still are loose to them? Well, the secure fitting, dynamic movement of your feet, excellent stability, and good traction all depend upon the way you lace up your volleyball shoes. Therefore, today I am going to teach you how you can lace volleyball shoes so that they will not irritate you during the hard match. So, Let’s begin the journey of how to lace volleyball shoes.

3 Common volleyball shoe lacing techniques

During my time, I used to rely on 3 basic and simple lacing techniques and they always worked for me. These are;

1. asic criss-cross lacing technique:

This is the classic and frequently used method to provide a perfect grip on your feet. It held the feet firmly and eased you with high bounces and swift stepping.

How to do this?

  • Step 1: Start by inserting the laces in the bottom of your shoes, keep in mind the laces on both sides of the shoes should be equal in size.
  • Step 2: Now take one side of the shoes and put it diagonally into the next eyelet.
  • Step 3: Now do the same process with the other side of the lace, take that, and insert it into the next diagonally eyelet.
  • Step 4: Continue this process several times until you reach the final eyelet of your volleyball shoes.
  • Step 5: Now stretch both sides of the lace, and tighten it according to your preferences. Make sure your feet are not too tight to move and not too loose to walk or jump.

Benefits of using the criss-cross lacing technique

  • This method of tying your laces allows equal pressure to the entire lace area, providing adequate comfort to your feet.
  • It also reduces the risk of slippage and diminishes unwanted movement, providing perfect stability to the feet.

2. Lock tucking technique

Now minimize the rollover problem by following this method of lacing your volleyball shoes. It is also called a runner lock or heel lock, perfectly grips your ankles and prevents heel slippage during running or multi-directional movement.

How to do this?

  • Start with the diagonal crossing of your laces, just like we did in criss-cross technique.
  • Keep doing the same until you reach the last eyelet.
  • After reaching the last eyelet, instead of making a knot try to create a loop by inserting the laces onto the corresponding opposite eyelet, giving a butterfly-like look.
  • Now, take the ends of both laces and make a knot by passing them through the loops of the same sides.
  • Tighten the laces so that you will lock your ankle as well as your heel.

Benefits of using the lace lock technique

  • Now minimize the risk of blisters or hot spots that occur due to excessive rubbing. This technique fixes your heel and ankle and dramatically reduces your movement while running and taking high jumps.
  • This method is very useful during swift change of direction and making high jumps as they lock your ankles preventing them any twisting during the several hours of practice.

3. Double back lacing technique

Regular criss-cross lacing is good, but double back lacing lets you adjust how tight your shoes feel. It offers extra security to your shoes.

How to do this?

  • After crisscrossing, you just thread the lace back down and up the next holes to make them tighter or looser in specific spots.
  • Here’s a simpler way to say that about high-instep lacing:
  • Regular lacing works at the bottom of the shoe.
  • In the middle, we skip some holes to give your high instep more room.
  • At the top, we use a special trick called “window lacing” (or “heel lock”) to tighten the heel without squeezing your foot. It’s like putting a window in the lacing for your instep and then locking the heel in place.

Benefits of using a double back lacing technique

  • This lace-tying technique for volleyball shoes provides extra support to your ankle. It is perfect for those who have an ankle sprain history.
  • The laces pass through the hole twice, creating a stronger grip than other knots.

Other methods to lace volleyball shoes

  • Some volleyball shoes have extra straps or loops to help you tighten them up just right. Use these to make your shoes feel snug and comfy, like a hug for your feet!
  • If you tuck your laces in, you won’t step on them or get them tangled up while you’re playing. This keeps you from tripping and lets you concentrate on the game!
  • Also, try out different tactics to tie your lace perfectly. You can try leaving out some holes, crossing the laces in different ways, or mixing up different tying methods to find what comforts you during a tough volleyball match. This can make your shoes feel more reliable and help them hold your feet in the appropriate position.
